Dental Crowns For Children: What To Expect From Their Treatment

At The Little Royals: Dentistry for Kids, we offer expert restorative dentistry treatment, including stainless steel dental crowns. Crowns are ideal for treating decayed, infected, or damaged baby teeth. They provide superior protection compared to fillings, and are built to last until your child’s baby tooth falls out naturally and is replaced by an adult tooth.

But what can you expect from the process? Great question! In this blog, we’ll take you through it step-by-step, so that you and your little one know exactly what will happen when you come into our office to get a dental crown in Jupiter.

1. Initial Consultation

To make sure a dental crown is necessary, Dr. Sal or Dr. Yasi Colombo will need to perform an oral exam. Dr. Sal or Dr. Yasi will look for signs of tooth decay, damage, and other issues that can be treated with a crown.

Depending on the situation, your child’s crown placement procedure may be done at a separate appointment, or right after their oral exam.

2. Cleaning, Numbing, And Preparing The Tooth

To begin the crown placement procedure, Dr. Sal or Dr. Yasi will clean your child’s mouth. If any tooth material has to be removed, they will also numb the area for your child’s comfort. We offer sedation at our office to keep your child comfortable during this process.

Then, Dr. Sal or Dr. Yasi will prepare your child’s tooth for a dental crown by trimming away severely damaged or decayed enamel with a dental drill.

3. Choosing A Pre-Fitted Stainless Steel Crown

After tooth preparation is complete, Dr. Sal or Dr. Yasi will choose a pre-fitted stainless steel crown that will completely cover the tooth and will fit properly next to the nearby teeth. We have a variety of different crowns that are perfect for any tooth and any situation, ensuring the best possible results.

4. Placing Your Child’s Crown

Once the right crown has been selected, Dr. Sal or Dr. Yasi will fill it with dental cement, and press it over your child’s tooth. The crown must remain in place for a few minutes as the cement “cures” and hardens. This bonds the crown to the tooth permanently, and it will remain in place until your child’s baby tooth falls out naturally.

5. Final Cleanup

Once the crown is in place, Dr. Sal or Dr. Yasi will clean up the treatment area by removing any excess dental cement and other debris that may have accumulated during the treatment process.

Then, your child will be all done. You and your little one will be sent home. They can eat a meal right away, but should eat soft foods for about 24 hours to ensure the crown sets properly. After this, they can resume their normal diet.
