Common Pediatric Dental Emergencies

Some common dental emergencies that require immediate attention include:

Toothaches

Toothaches can be caused by a few different things. It’s possible that your child may have a piece of food or another such object stuck between the tooth and gum, which may make the tooth hurt quite a bit. However, this could also be a sign of tooth decay or an infected tooth.

We recommend rinsing your child’s mouth with warm saltwater to help clean it, and flossing their teeth. Over-the-counter pain medicine like children’s Motrin or Tylenol can help with pain, as can an ice pack. If your child’s toothache doesn’t go away within 24-36 hours, you should come to The Little Royals for an appointment with Dr. Sal or Dr. Yasi Columbo.

Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is considered a dental emergency. Whether your little one has a small cavity or a large one that is causing an infected tooth, it is critical to get treatment right away. Depending on the extent of decay and whether it is in a baby tooth or permanent tooth, we may recommend a filling, crown, or even root canal therapy.

Signs of tooth decay include discoloration of a tooth, visible pitting, toothache, and an increased sensitivity to heat, cold and pressure. If you see these signs, bring your child in for an appointment right away.

Bleeding Gums, Lips, Tongue And Cheeks (Lacerations)

If your child is in an accident that has caused lacerations to their oral tissue, this may be considered a dental emergency. Most minor oral lacerations will resolve on their own. However, if your child’s mouth continues to bleed heavily after 1-2 hours, they may have large cuts and lacerations that require stitches.

You can rinse your child’s mouth with water to clean it, then use paper towels, gauze or cotton balls to absorb blood. If bleeding does not cease or slow within 1-2 hours, come to The Little Royals for a pediatric emergency appointment in Jupiter.

Tooth Trauma (Cracked, Chipped, or Damaged Teeth)

Even minor tooth trauma can result in deep cracks and damage. Whether your child slips and falls, takes a hard hit in a contact sport, or is in any other kind of accident that causes oral trauma, you should get help from a pediatric dentist in Jupiter right away.

Chipped teeth can be sharp and affect your child’s smile, and cracks in the tooth can lead to infection. If you look at your child’s mouth after oral trauma and you see any kind of visible fracture, crack, or jagged edge, schedule a consultation at our office right away.

Knocked Out Tooth

If your child loses a baby tooth prematurely due to oral trauma, this can interfere with the proper eruption of their permanent teeth. In the same way, losing a permanent tooth can also affect your child’s oral development. If your little one has a tooth knocked out, it is critical to come see us within 1 hour, and 2 hours at the maximum. Your child’s tooth must be replaced and splinted as soon as possible in order to save it.

In the case of any of these listed emergencies, please call our office at (561) 510-1450 so we can help guide you through the next steps and schedule a follow-up appointment as needed.

What to Do In a Dental Emergency

Some common things to remember when handling a broken or knocked out tooth emergency: Any fractured permanent tooth fragments should be collected and stored in cold milk and brought to the office. Any knocked out tooth should be grabbed by the crown of the tooth (not the root) and briefly rinsed with cold water, and replaced into the tooth socket immediately. If you aren’t able to replace the tooth safely, be sure to store it in milk or the patient’s saliva and bring it to the office immediately. Knocked out baby teeth should not be put back in.

Tips To Avoid Dental Emergencies

While you can never completely eliminate the chance of your child experiencing a dental emergency, there are a few things you can do to reduce their risk and avoid emergencies.

First, your child should see Dr. Sal or Dr. Yasi Colombo every six months for a checkup. This will ensure that they can check for issues like cavities, damaged or loose dental work, and other problems that may eventually lead to an emergency.

Another important step is to buy a sports mouthguard for your child if they play any kind of sport that may result in physical contact. That includes basketball, baseball, football, soccer, and lots of other sports. A custom-fitted sports mouthguard will cushion and protect their teeth, and could help them avoid chipped, loose, or knocked-out teeth if they take a hit during their sport.

You should also make sure your children don’t chew on very hard foods like popcorn kernels, hard candy, and ice, as these can break the teeth. In addition, make sure they don’t make a habit of biting or chewing non-food objects, particularly if you have a very young toddler. Their teeth are meant to chew food, not pens, toys, and other random household objects.

Why Hospitals Can’t Do Emergency Dentistry

If your child’s mouth is bleeding, they’re crying, and you’re panicking, your first instinct may be to go right to the hospital ER. But that’s not the best choice. In fact, most hospitals can’t do emergency dentistry at all, especially for kids.

Hospitals don’t usually have dentists, let alone pediatric dentists, on their staff. And while they may have a dentist or oral surgeon on call for serious issues like broken jaws or major facial trauma, they will not usually treat a patient with a more minor issue like a chipped tooth or pulled-out filling.

Even if you can get treatment at an ER, you’ll likely pay thousands of dollars more than you would if your little one saw an emergency dentist in Jupiter, such as Dr. Sal or Dr. Yasi. So unless you believe your child’s emergency is life-threatening, don’t go to the ER. Contact The Little Royals: Dentistry For Kids at (561) 510-1450 to get the same-day care your child needs.

What To Do If Your Child Has A Loose Tooth

This depends on the situation. If it’s a baby tooth and your child hasn’t recently experienced any dental trauma or injuries, the answer is “nothing.” Just wait for it to fall out! Baby teeth are supposed to fall out naturally from the ages of 6-12, starting with the front teeth. It’s likely that your child’s adult teeth are coming in, so the tooth is supposed to fall out.

However, if your child has experienced dental trauma that’s knocked a tooth loose, you should come and see the team at The Little Royals: Dentistry For Kids. Losing a baby tooth prematurely can result in oral development issues, so your child may need a treatment like a space maintainer.

If your child has a loose adult tooth, this is a very serious emergency, and you should come into our office within 1-2 hours. If you wait too long, the tooth may die and we will not be able to splint it in place and restore your child’s smile.
